Matkan väreily / Ripple of the Journey.
Livery concept for VR Group rolling stock.
A train is a long object that people read from a standing start. You have seconds on a platform to find the right car: the bike space, the restaurant, eco class. VR's answer, like most operators', is small signage near the doors.
Matkan väreily puts the answer in the livery itself. A single graphic element, varied along the length of the train, becomes a ripple of forest, field and lake blurred by speed. Inside that ripple, negative space forms the icons. Each car states its function at the scale of the car itself, readable from across the platform.
One motif, endless variation. The system uses VR's existing green and icon language, so it extends the current fleet rather than replacing it.
